Although Cloud Application and Cloud Platform sound similar they are actually two entirely different aspects of Cloud Computing.

Yes, they both have the word Cloud in the name and they both use the Cloud, but I assure you they are different. Like apples and oranges, or clouds and...different types of clouds?

If you’re still trying to get your head around the idea of Cloud Computing check out an earlier blog post of ours ‘Get Your Head in the Cloud’.

A question that we get asked a lot is “how do I move my business to the Cloud when I still have applications that run on my computer?”

Firstly, let me start by explaining what a Cloud Application is and how they work. A Cloud Application is a piece of software that exists in the Cloud, any program that you login via a website is a Cloud Application. They use remote servers to store data and are also known as Software as a Service (SaaS). Xero is a good example of a Cloud Application where employees all have different logins and access the software via the internet.

A Cloud Platform is an online server that allows you to move your whole business to the Cloud whether your applications are Cloud based or not. Applications and files that still need to physically sit on your computer are able to be stored on a Cloud Platform. So even if you’re still running a version of MYOB that requires a server, you can move it to a Cloud Platform so all data is saved safely, your updates are managed by your Cloud Platform provider and MYOB can be accessed by any device.

A Cloud Platform means you don’t need to sit around waiting for your essential applications to become Cloud based (which can take ages and require re-training of staff) and you can start leveraging the Cloud in your business.

A true Cloud Platform will also add a level of security to your business by keeping data safe and secure as a good provider should provide multiple data replication centres.

Now you know the difference between a Cloud Application and a Cloud Platform there’s nothing holding you back from moving your business to the Cloud! To learn more about Cloud Platforms and what VAULT can do for your business, go to:
