MYOB ending support for outdated technologies

Written by Emily Gam | 12-Jul-2017 05:01:06

In December of this year MYOB will cease support for Windows Server 2008r2 and SBS 2011. If you’re still using Microsoft SQL Server 2008r2, Windows 7 or Office 2010, you need to upgrade immediately as MYOB support for these products has already stopped.

Forget servers. Move to the Cloud and stop upgrading every few years.

Using old technology that is no longer supported opens up your business to massive risks, either from security holes that aren’t being fixed (think WannaCry), or the risk of software crashing and losing data because of incompatibility. It also means your business isn’t utilising the best technology and staff may be struggling to use slow and frustrating software that is sapping productivity and causing mistakes. Technology should allow your business to become more efficient and make processes easier, not slow everything down and cause massive headaches.

MYOB ending support means they can’t and won’t help if something goes wrong with their software while you’re running it on outdated technology.

Do I need to upgrade?

If you’re using any of these in your business:

  • Windows Server 2008r2 (all versions)
  • Small Business Server 2011 (SBS)

Then the answer is YES!

If you’re using one of these:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008r2
  • Windows 7 (all versions)
  • Microsoft Office 2010 (all versions)

Then the answer is YES ABSOLUTLY!

What are my options?

There are two options if you’re running anything from the list above:

  1. Upgrade to a new server and repeat the entire process once the software is no longer supported
  2. Move to a Cloud platform that will protect you from this cycle and give you with the tools to improve productivity, collaboration and scalability.

Moving to a new server and installing the latest software will solve your problem in the short term, although there will come a time in the next couple of years where you are faced with the exact same problem.

If you are required to upgrade your technology either way, it makes sense to get the most out of your money by upgrading to a platform that gives your business the tools it needs to succeed. IT is no longer just an overhead, it's now a strategic arm of your business that will drive your plan for the future.

It’s important to keep up to date with end of support lifecycles, and your technology in general. Not upgrading doesn’t just mean you don’t have the latest shiny toy, it could be creating a huge element of risk in your business.

Moving to a Cloud platform like VAULT, will mean that all upgrades are taken care of externally. All updates are taken care of outside of business hours so there is no downtime and IT support is 24/7.
